Launch of EU project MAKING-CITY: energy-positive area
The Dutch city of Groningen serves as a "lighthouse city" in the European Horizon 2020 project MAKING-CITY. This project focuses on the development of energy-positive neighborhoods (Positive Energy Districts – PEDs) and supports the transition to climate-neutral cities.
Energy-positive neighborhoods with Making-CITY
MAKING CITY is a large-scale demonstration project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program. The project has a five-year duration and a budget of €20 million. A total of 34 partners from nine countries are collaborating to test and implement innovative solutions for urban energy transitions based on the Positive Energy District (PED)-concept.
Groningen and Oulu as model cities for sustainable urban development
The cities of Groningen (Netherlands) and Oulu (Finland) have been designated as “lighthouse citiesBoth cities are leading the way in demonstrating energy-efficient solutions and sustainable neighborhood development. Their experiences serve as a blueprint for six other European cities, the so-called "follower cities”: León (Spain), Bassano del Grappa (Italy), Kadiköy (Turkey), Poprad (Slovakia), Vidin (Bulgaria) and Lublin (Poland).
Kick-off in Valladolid: collaboration for a sustainable future
The official launch of MAKING-CITY took place on December 13th and 14th in Valladolid, Spain. During this meeting, all the involved partners gathered to finalize the project plan. The project is coordinated by the CARTIF Technology Centre and involves cities, research institutions, large and small companies, public institutions, and experts in the field of exploiting innovations in smart cities.
Energy-positive neighborhoods: key to climate goals
Positive Energy Districts are urban areas that annually produce more renewable energy than they consume, with zero net CO₂ emissions. This aligns with the ambitions of the Paris Climate Goals (COP21) and the EU's SET Plan. MAKING-CITY is developing advanced methods and strategies for this, aiming for a long-term vision for sustainable cities: the "City Vision 2050".
Impact on global climate goals
Cities play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. According to the report, “Deadline April 2020, XNUMXCities can independently reduce global emissions by 5%. In collaboration with governments and the private sector, this can increase to as much as 46%. MAKING-CITY not only delivers regional impact but also supports the global energy transition.
Building sustainable cities worldwide together
The results of MAKING-CITY are crucial for thousands of cities worldwide. More than 9.000 cities on six continents have signed up to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. Thanks to MAKING-CITY, they have concrete tools to achieve their sustainability ambitions.
