Research into public acceptance of the energy transition
How do we ensure public acceptance of the energy transition and how do we involve citizens in decision-making about regional energy strategies? These two questions are central to the new research project. Renewable Energy Strategies: Effective Public Engagement in Climate Policy and Energy Transition (RESPECT) from the University of Groningen (RUG) and New Energy CoalitionThe initial research and studies will take place in a pilot project—a "living lab"—in the provinces of Groningen and South Holland. The project begins on May 1, 2020, and will run for four years.
From resistance to public acceptance
Public resistance can be a serious obstacle to the implementation of sustainable energy projects, such as wind farms. Dr. Goda Perlaviciute of the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences and Dr. Lorenzo Squintani of the Faculty of Law are investigating whether and how involving citizens in decision-making can lead to better and more accepted energy projects. To study the practice of public participation, Perlaviciute and Squintani, together with various civil society partners, have conducted the Like!Me Living Lab set up.
Regional energy strategies for Groningen and Zuid-Holland
Building on their work in the Like!Me Living Lab, they are investigating how citizens can be involved in decision-making about regional energy strategies in the Dutch provinces of Groningen and Zuid-Holland. Both provinces were chosen as research areas based on the financing conditionsof the project.
About RESPECT
The project will develop a guide with practical examples, strategies, and tools to optimize public participation, thereby increasing public acceptance of energy projects and accelerating the sustainable energy transition. This can help municipalities and government agencies involve citizens earlier in energy projects, reduce resistance, and increase their participation.
