Watts in Grass!?
NL-DE collaboration that uses grass and digestate for sustainable energy and products.
Goal
A working and scalable farm-scale processing system that ferments grass and residual streams more efficiently. CO2 from biogas is converted into additional methane using green hydrogen, and nitrogen is removed to reduce emissions. The fiber-rich residual streams are processed into high-quality biocoal. This creates new business models for farmers in the Dutch-German border region.
Description
Watts in Grass accelerates the energy transition by utilising grass-rich waste streams locally. The project increases biogas yields, converts CO2 into additional methane, and reduces nitrogen and greenhouse gas emissions. This contributes to circular agriculture, sustainable energy production, and new regional value chains in the Netherlands and Germany.
Impact on the region
Watts in Grass strengthens innovations in green gas and circular agriculture in Noord-Nederland through knowledge development, involvement of regional governments/partners (including the Hanze and the Province of Drenthe), and dissemination via networks, events, and workshops/masterclasses in the programme area. These innovations also help local farmers address nitrogen polution problems at the regional and national level.
Our role
New Energy Coalition is the coordinator and responsible for daily project management. We organise project meetings and monitor the overall progress and budget of the project. We also lead the dissemination of knowledge and project communication through online channels and events.
Partners in the project
Next to New Energy Coalition nine organisations from the Netherlands and Germany are participating in this project: Kompetenzzentrum 3N, Hanze, Hochschule Emden/Leer, Hochschule Osnabrück, Ekwadraat Consultancy, Schulte Siering, BTG Biomass Technology Group, Paques Global and D&R Energy.
In addition, eight organisations are participating as associate partners in this project: LV Bioenergie, Wifö LK Aurich, Loonbedrijf Thomssen, Landwirtschaftskammer NRW, Stichting Beon, Province of Drenthe, Green Carbon Factory and Grassa.
