On the potential of the North Sea region for the future energy supply
On 11 and 12 November, the Energy Trends 2024 conference took place in London with the theme “current trends in energy, the environment and sustainable development”. One of the highlights of the conference was a keynote speech by Marieke Abbink-Pellenbarg, CEO of New Energy Coalition, on the potential of the North Sea region for their future energy supply. There is much to share on this topic, as there is a lot going on in the Dutch North Groningen region and the North Sea region when it comes to energy transition developments. Key insights
Groningen as the Energy Valley of the future
-
- The region is transforming from a gas producer to a hydrogen and renewable energy hub.
- The energy transition offers economic opportunities, including 10.000 new jobs in East Groningen.
North Sea as a sustainable energy source
-
- Offshore wind capacity grows to 300+ GW by 2050.
- Reuse of existing oil and gas infrastructure for hydrogen production and CO₂ storage.
- Hydrogen storage and transport via existing pipelines and new energy hubs.
Cooperation within Europe essential
-
- An international strategy is needed for coordinated import and storage of sustainable energy.
- North Sea countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Norway must pursue a joint policy to accelerate hydrogen and wind energy projects.
- Better integration of the Scandinavian and Baltic regions in the European energy market.
East Groningen as a European hydrogen cluster
-
- Switching from local industry to CO₂-free hydrogen before 2030.
- Investment of €100 million needed for infrastructure and factory conversion.
