Hydrogen in Hoogeveen: application in existing buildings

Pilot project for hydrogen as a sustainable heat source in existing buildings.

The study HYDROGEN DISTRICT: Plan for hydrogen in Hoogeveen describes a groundbreaking demonstration project in which homes in Hoogeveen are heated with green hydrogen. This project is one of the first in the Netherlands to convert an existing residential area to a hydrogen network, reusing the existing gas infrastructure.

Key insights:

  • The use of hydrogen in the built environment

    • New district Nijstad East: 80-100 homes connected to a hydrogen distribution network.
    • Existing neighborhood Inherited lands: phased conversion of 427 homes from natural gas to hydrogen.

Technical and legal feasibility

    • Use of existing natural gas networks for hydrogen.
    • Safety measures and regulations for safe application.
    • Hydrogen central heating boilers as an alternative to natural gas installations.

Support and social impact

    • Local cooperation with residents and municipalities.
    • Cost-benefit analysis compared to other sustainable heating solutions.
