HyDelta 4 continues hydrogen research
HyDelta 4 continues its research into the safe integration of hydrogen into the existing gas network in the Netherlands.
HyDelta 4 kicks off
This month, the fourth edition of the public-private research program HyDelta launches. The research focuses on the integration of hydrogen gas into the Dutch gas transport and distribution system. HyDelta 4 has a duration of 15 months. The results of the HyDelta program are publicly available and free of charge and are attracting worldwide interest. The HyDelta consortium consists of Gasunie, Netbeheer Nederland, TKI Nieuw Gas, DNV, Kiwa, TNO, and New Energy Coalition (coordinator).
Research into safe integration of hydrogen into existing gas network
In the Netherlands, we continue to work on the energy transition. Sustainable gases are essential in this regard, with sustainable hydrogen playing a key role, particularly in industry. Dutch grid operators are committed to transporting hydrogen via gas transport and distribution pipelines to wherever it is needed in the future. A significant portion of the knowledge required for this is being acquired through the HyDelta research program.
Insights from previous hydrogen network projects and global developments in hydrogen have led to new questions, for example, regarding the prevention and measurement of hydrogen emissions from a pipeline network, and the balancing and safety of the network, even under exceptional circumstances. Therefore, HyDelta 4 was launched in April 2025.
Hydrogen network increasingly closer
It's clear that we're getting closer to realizing the hydrogen networks: while previous research and testing focused primarily on technical feasibility and the behavior of hydrogen, the focus now is on planning optimal distribution to industrial clusters, among other things, and monitoring and maintaining future hydrogen networks. The research results are always available on the HyDelta website, as are the 75+ reports already available from previous phases of the research program. These studies are attracting global interest.
HyDelta is co-financed by TKI-Energie from the PPP funds for Top Consortia for Knowledge and Innovation (TKIs) of the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth – reference TKI2025-HyDelta.
About HyDelta
At the initiative of Gasunie and Netbeheer Nederland, the HyDelta consortium was formed in 2020, consisting of partners with extensive experience in researching and testing the transport and application of hydrogen. The research program focuses on an integrated approach to solutions for the transport and use of hydrogen. Directly applicable research is central. The first phase of the research program, HyDelta 1, launched in January 2021, followed by HyDelta 2, 3, and now 4. The research results are available in the HyDelta database.
