Half a billion subsidy for 100 MW electrolyser in Eemshaven
RWE secures over half a billion in subsidies for a 100 MW electrolyser in Eemshaven, a milestone for the future greening of the industry.
Power company RWE wants to build a second, larger hydrogen plant in Eemshaven. This involves a 100-megawatt electrolyzer, for which the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth has awarded a subsidy of over €550 million. The support is intended to bridge the price gap between green hydrogen and fossil fuels, enabling large-scale production.
The new plant follows an earlier 50-megawatt project and, together with that installation, is intended to form the first large-scale hydrogen production site in the region. This will strengthen Eemshaven's position within the energy transition in the north of the Netherlands.
An important condition is the construction of the national hydrogen network by GasunieThis network should be able to transport hydrogen to other industrial regions, such as Rotterdam and Germany. The first sections are expected around 2029; national coverage is not expected for several years. This development underscores Groningen's strategic role.
