First hydrogen-powered houses in Hoogeveen

Nine households in Hoogeveen will switch from natural gas to hydrogen early next year. A major step toward making the Netherlands more sustainable.

In early 2026, the first nine homes in Hoogeveen, Drenthe, are expected to switch from natural gas to hydrogen. This will take Hoogeveen a significant step toward its 2050 goal: a Netherlands powered entirely by hydrogen. The Hoogeveen Hydrogen District is also part of HEAVENN., an ongoing project of New Energy Coalition.

With the pilot project in Hoogeveen, the parties involved are investigating whether (green) hydrogen can be a good, safe, and affordable alternative to natural gas. They are focusing on both existing homes in the Erflanden neighborhood and new homes being built in Nijstad-Oost.

However, the road to implementation was long. The initiators presented their first plans in early 2019.
