First green hydrogen region for Groningen and Drenthe

Noord-Nederland region is the first region in the Netherlands to receive a subsidy for its so-called Hydrogen Valley, modeled after Silicon Valley in California. A green hydrogen supply chain for the Dutch provinces of Groningen-Drenthe.The European Commission has selected the project for a grant of €20 million with a public-private co-financing of €70 million.

This brings the total Hydrogen Valley project size to approximately €90 million. This subsidy is intended for the development of a fully functional green hydrogen supply chain in Groningen and Drenthe. The consortium aims to sign the agreement by January 2020 at the latest, at which point the six-year project can begin.

This is a great example of how Groningen and Drenthe are pioneering new sustainable energy provinces. Because the Groningen gas field is scheduled to close in 2022, this project offers excellent opportunities and job creation for the north of the country. The region has everything it takes to become a leader in the energy transition.

Grant application HEAVENN

The program HEAVENN.The consortium submitted the grant application in April of this year and consists of 31 public and private parties from six European countries. We were involved in this project together with the Partnership Noord-Nederland The driving forces behind the application, which is supported by more than 65 national and international partners from California to Japan and New Zealand, are unique in that it encompasses the entire hydrogen value chain and takes place within a single geographic region.

Integrated green hydrogen chain: from production to filling stations

Within the HEAVENN program, various projects are being implemented for a green hydrogen supply chain in Groningen and Drenthe. This includes large-scale production of green hydrogen as a feedstock for industry, the storage, transport, and distribution of hydrogen, and its application in energy supply for both industry and the built environment and mobility. Existing natural gas pipelines are being adapted for hydrogen transport, and new hydrogen pipelines are being constructed on the Chemical Park Delfzijl and between the GZI-Next terrain and the GETEC Business Park in Emmen. An underground hydrogen storage facility is planned at HyStock in Veendam. Hydrogen for domestic heating is being implemented in Hoogeveen and Groningen, and for industrial use in Delfzijl and Emmen. In mobility, hydrogen will be used for buses, light and heavy trucks, and passenger cars, among other things. Hydrogen filling stations will be built in Groningen and Emmen, in addition to the planned ones in Pesse, Groningen, and the already operational station in Delfzijl. A hydrogen-powered inland vessel will also be built, and green hydrogen will be used in the production of e-kerosene for aircraft. Heavier vehicles are particularly well-suited to hydrogen use, and this is where the greatest CO2 reduction and environmental benefits can be achieved.

About HEAVENN

HEAVENN (H2 Energy Applications in Valley Environments for Northern Netherlands) brings together various pilot projects across the entire green hydrogen value chain and serves as a blueprint for current and future Hydrogen Valleys within and outside Europe. The transition to green hydrogen presents many opportunities and challenges. For example, supply and demand are highly interdependent in getting this new market off the ground. Within HEAVENN, we demonstrate the possibilities to contribute to the realization of a new hydrogen market.

This project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (now Clean Hydrogen Partnership) under grant agreement No. 875090.

Project manager and expert in hydrogen chains

As a project manager, I'm an expert in hydrogen value chains. I have experience in various disciplines related to the energy transition and have worked on projects involving system integration, international collaboration on hydrogen (carriers) and value chains, and research and development projects. New Energy Coalition I am mainly involved in the HEAVENN program, which involves developing a fully functional green hydrogen chain in Noord-Nederland is central.
