Securing economy and energy in the North Sea region
The 9th edition of Wind Meets Gas will focus on the trilemma of how to combine the objectives of greening energy with keeping energy affordable and safe.
Energy affordability is becoming a growing problem, as not only energy prices themselves are rising again, but also related costs due to taxes, carbon costs, and grid-related levies. Concerns about the total cost of energy are therefore not only increasingly raising public concerns about their energy bills, but also about the industry, especially the energy-intensive sector, which is worried about its international competitiveness and ability to make financially sound investments. At the same time, investments in renewable energy capacity itself appear to be slowing down. How do we deal with all this?
The security of supply and demand has become an even greater concern. International geopolitical and trade policy unrest has led to a less predictable international policy climate, with uncertain consequences for the international energy transition process and its timing. But not only has concern about the economic side of energy security increased, but so has concern about the potential for physical disruption to energy systems. Therefore, defending energy security is receiving much more attention today than it did a few years ago.
While affordability and safety are gaining political momentum, greening and climate seem to be getting a less prominent place on various political agendas.
Where do Northwest Europe and the North Sea regions, in particular, stand in this trilemma? Can they address these challenges together and try to reconcile their green energy goals while keeping them affordable and safe? This question will be central to the symposium.
