
Summer School: Public Participation in Sustainable Transition

The Summer School Public Participation in Sustainable Transitions by the University of Groningen, Public Participation Center, Ameland Energie Coöperatie and New Energy Coalition focuses on the role of public participation in sustainable energy transitions, with a specific focus on the Wadden Island of Ameland.
Objective and content
The course is interdisciplinary in scope, combining insights from law, social sciences, spatial planning and environmental science, among others. At the centre is a practice-oriented challenge presented by the Ameland Energie Coöperatie. Participants work in international and multidisciplinary teams on solutions which they present to the cooperative and fellow participants at the end of the week.
Programme components
- Lectures by experts from various disciplines;
- Interactive working sessions in which participants work together on the central challenge;
- Excursion to Ameland to visit local sustainable energy projects and engage with stakeholders;
- Social activities, such as a city walk and a closing dinner, to promote networking and knowledge exchange.
For whom?
The Summer School is intended for master students, PhD students, postdocs, researchers and professionals interested in public participation within sustainable transitions. A good command of English is required, as the programme is offered in English.

- Dates: 25-29 August 2025;
- Location: Groningen, with a one-day excursion to Ameland;
- Cost: €300 for students; €450 for professionals. Travel costs and accommodation not included;
- Registration: By 20 May 2025 via the online application form.

- Have an understanding of the role of public participation in energy transitions;
