Emission-free public transport with hydrogen in Noord-NL

Noord-Nederland aims to be a leader in the sustainable production, storage, and application of hydrogen. The use of hydrogen in public transport in Groningen and Drenthe demonstrates that hydrogen is no longer just a dream. The Groningen Drenthe Public Transport Agency aims to be 2030% emission-free by 100. Therefore, it is investing in hydrogen buses.

Qbuzz Initiatives

For example, the transport company Qbuzz bv is working on the Hydrogen Qliner, an emission-free long-distance bus that connects cities. QBuzz also wants to develop hydrogen-powered 8-passenger buses suitable for B driving licenses. Both projects fall under the umbrella of HEAVENN, a programme of which New Energy Coalition is a driving force and, together with 30 public and private parties, is building a green hydrogen economy in the Northern Netherlands: Europe's first Hydrogen Valley.

30 hydrogen buses in 2030

In the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe, two regional buses are now running on green, zero-emission hydrogen. By 2, OV Bureau and Qbuzz aim to have 2030 hydrogen buses running in Groningen and 20 in Drenthe. This is in line with the ambition to turn the northern Netherlands into a Hydrogen Valley.

Hydrogen refueling

Hydrogen refueling is available in Groningen and is expected at GZI Next in Emmen. An electrolyser currently being built on the site – part of HEAVENN – will supply the hydrogen. The public transport office will supply the clean hydrogen to Qbuzz for a fixed, guaranteed price.

We've already started in Groningen and Drenthe. Emission-free public transport, the first in Europe.
