Senate approves Groningen Act

On July 7, the Senate approved the Groningen Act. This law officially codifies the agreements from the parliamentary inquiry into gas extraction.

In the spring of 2023, the report 'Groningers boven gas' (Groningen above gas) was published regarding natural gas extraction in Groningen. In response, the cabinet introduced a package of measures that included making 22 billion euros available over the next thirty years to repair the damage in Groningen and North Drenthe. These measures are now being enshrined in law. In April, the House of Representatives approved the Groningen Act, and the Senate has now also adopted this law.

Companies, knowledge institutions, and governments in Groningen and North Drenthe were already working together on a plan as the foundation for the social and economic agenda for the region. The goal of this plan 'New Energy for GroningenThe aim is to enable the region to benefit structurally from this energy transition, with improvements in broad prosperity, employment, and the regional image. The Groningen Act allows work to continue on the implementation of the plans for the recovery of the northern energy region.
