Groningen and Oldenburg test sustainable urban logistics

The Dutch-German project Citylogistic 2.0 on sustainable urban logistics presented at New Energy Forum.

Sustainable urban logistics

The purpose of Citylogistic 2.0 is developing an innovative, intelligent, and sustainable distribution system consisting of an energy-self-sufficient, mobile mini-hub and a specially designed and newly developed electric vehicle – LEFV (Light Electric Freight Vehicle) – powered by the energy generated by the mini-hub. The hub is powered by renewable energy. The mini-hub is modular and made of sustainable building materials and is also suitable for temporary use.

Throughout the day, visitors were able to admire the Light Electric Freight Vehicle (LEFV), developed for the project, up close. There was considerable interest. During the presentation, Frank Pierie and Alex van Spyk from Hanze University of Applied Sciences, along with Niels Huttenhuis from Fulpra–sustainable transport bicycles- took the audience through their own behaviour, the aim of the project and the various components.

Last mile delivery

By deploying a minihub and the LEFV, the project aims to reduce CO2 emissions from "last-mile delivery" in inner cities. A minihub is an energy-neutral modular building for storage and distribution, which can be built on the edge of residential areas. From here, drivers can deliver parcels in residential areas with their electric LEFVs. A major advantage is that this prevents (diesel) trucks from entering residential areas and city centers. This can achieve an emission reduction of up to 78%. The nine-month test phase in Oldenburg, Germany, will begin in early 2026, followed later by a second test phase from the Entrance test site in Groningen.

During the presentation, a lively discussion developed with the visitors about their own behavior in daily practice and the benefits of using a minihub.
