Cosun reduces CO2 and nitrogen in sugar beet production

Good news for the sustainability of industry in the northern energy region. Royal Cosun, known locally in Hoogkerk/Groningen as "the sugar factory," is taking a significant step toward its sustainability ambitions: reducing CO2 and nitrogen emissions from sugar beet production.

Minister Sophie Hermans (Climate and Green Growth) and five provinces signed an agreement as an interim step towards binding agreements on investments and the reduction of greenhouse gases and nitrogen.

Cosun is working to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 2030, in line with the Paris climate goals. The plans are developed through a series of projects spread across six factories. The measures focus on:

  • Use of industrial heat pumps
  • Electrification of processes
  • More biogas and green gas production
  • Phasing out lime kiln emissions

This not only reduces CO₂ emissions, but also energy consumption and nitrogen (NOx) emissions. In addition to the sustainability package at six locations, Cosun is investing in further improving the living environment, with a particular focus on reducing ammonia emissions in North Brabant and Groningen, and on water conservation in Gelderland.
